Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
